Social media trends 2026 research highlights seven shifts marketers are seeing across platforms this year, from AI generated content to the rise of social search over traditional search engines.

These social media trends 2026 findings start with video: according to recent industry research, video remains the dominant content format, with Instagram Reels now supporting videos up to 20 minutes and YouTube Shorts extending to 3 minutes. The research found 68% of marketing leaders say YouTube drives the most business impact of any platform.

AI generated content is becoming mainstream, though with real caution attached. The report found 97% of marketing leaders believe marketers need to understand AI use, while 52% of social users say they’re concerned about undisclosed AI generated brand content. Sixty-five percent said they accept AI for faster customer service specifically.

Serialized, episodic content is gaining traction over one-off posts, with audiences prioritizing both interaction (58%) and original content series (57%) at nearly equal rates. The research also points to content saturation as a driving factor behind a shift toward community over virality, noting brands published an average of 9.5 posts daily in 2024.

Engagement expectations have risen as well: three-quarters of social users expect a brand response within 24 hours, pushing community management toward a more proactive posture, including on emerging platforms like Substack and Bluesky.

Authenticity remains a clear preference, with 46% of users resisting AI influencers specifically, favoring real creators and human storytelling instead.

The report’s seventh trend, social search, may be the most structurally significant: nearly a third of consumers now start searches on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube instead of Google, rising to over half among Gen Z specifically.

The social search trend is the one worth paying closest attention to, since it connects directly to the same shift our AI Visibility work already tracks: search behavior moving away from traditional engines toward platforms and AI systems that synthesize answers directly. A brand optimizing only for Google is increasingly optimizing for a shrinking share of how people actually search, especially among younger audiences.

On the content side, the serialized content and community-over-virality trends both point toward the same operational shift: a real content calendar and strategy built around sustained series and consistent engagement outperforms one-off viral attempts, and proactive community management is no longer optional at the response-time expectations users now hold.

For agencies and in-house teams managing multiple client or brand accounts, the AI generated content trend carries a specific risk worth flagging internally: the 52% of users concerned about undisclosed AI content is a real trust gap, not a minor detail. Disclosure practices worth adopting now, before regulation forces the issue, protect brand trust more cheaply than repairing it after the fact.

The shift toward social media trends 2026 favoring community over virality also changes how success gets measured. A content calendar built around consistent, moderate-reach posting that builds loyalty will often outperform a strategy chasing viral spikes, even when the raw engagement numbers look less dramatic month to month
